While in Canada attending a conference on the occult, Holmes and Watson receive a telegram that Lady Penrose has been murdered in La Morte Rouge. The message from Lady Penrose asks for help before her death, pulling Holmes into an international investigation. Holmes decides to pursue the case despite the distance from Britain.

Holmes and Watson arrive at the remote village La Morte Rouge to begin their inquiry. The locals are convinced the murder is the work of the legendary monster of the marsh, fueling fear and superstition. The investigators start gathering clues among a suspicious ensemble of villagers.

Watson witnesses the monster across the marsh, describing it as a ghastly apparition that roars and spits fire. His description heightens the sense of danger and reinforces the need to separate superstition from evidence. Holmes remains skeptical about any supernatural explanation.

Holmes identifies Lady Penrose as Lillian Gentry, a former actress connected to a previous murder case in which Alistair Ramson was involved. Ramson was believed killed in a prison escape two years earlier but Holmes suspects he is living in the village under a new disguise. The discovery shifts the investigation from a monster to a human criminal.

Holmes turns his attention to Judge Brisson, a village figure with ties to Ramson’s case. Despite warnings from Holmes, Brisson is murdered, suggesting the killer knows the investigators and will stop at nothing. The murder confirms the killer is among the villagers.

Holmes tracks the suspect to Ramson’s hidden lair beneath the marsh and learns the killer is planning a third murder. The discovery shows that Ramson has a precise target and is not merely striking at random. Holmes prepares to close the net.

Ramson is cornered by Journet, who realizes the danger and uses the killer’s own weapon, a five-pronged garden weeders, to kill him. Holmes and Watson witness the end of Ramson’s reign of terror as the murderer’s identity is finally confirmed. The investigators prepare to leave for Britain with the case closed.
