When a winged figure appears, a death follows. Mystery author Cornelia Van Gorder rents The Oaks, a country house scarred by murders committed by the ruthless outlaw known as The Bat. Meanwhile, owner and bank president John Fleming has hidden a million‑dollar embezzlement in the house, but he is slain before retrieving it, sparking fresh terror.
