A withdrawn painter, separated from his wife, receives a mysterious suitcase from his long‑absent mother. Inside are keepsakes and a diary chronicling her youth as a cinema pianist, the advent of talkies, her marriage, and how she placed him with affluent grandparents. As he delves into her story, his ten‑year‑old son Antoine tries to break through his father's grief, prompting events that force the family to confront the past.
