In 1827, Berthet, the son of a craftsman and a young seminarian, is arrested, tried and condemned to death after being accused of killing his former lover, the wife of a prominent man who had previously employed him as a tutor to his children. The narrative follows the ensuing trial and the moral dilemmas it raises for the community.
