Ruiz began La présence réelle after I.N.A. asked for a personal vision of the Avignon Festival. Rather than record actual performances— which would require respecting each staging and paying rights— he created a fictional, Rivette‑ish story about theater. Exteriors were filmed in Avignon, interiors in Paris, and finished the following Tuesday.
