During the first manned space mission, overseen by Professor Bernard Quatermass of the British Experimental Rocket Group, the returning craft brings back only one of its three astronauts while the other two vanish and the survivor behaves oddly. Investigations reveal an alien entity infiltrated the vessel, forcing Quatermass and his team to race against time to prevent the creature from unleashing catastrophe on Earth.
