Vautier, a prosperous surgeon in his fifties, becomes enamored with Hélène, a young woman of modest origins. He grants her the freedom to pursue a series of brief affairs, believing his love is unconditional. The fragile balance shatters when her former lover Jean Trapeau reappears, complicating their unconventional arrangement.
