In 1348 plague‑ravaged England, a nine‑year‑old boy from the isolated village of Little Griffin is haunted by a vivid dream of a lake with a floating coffin, a white church bearing an iron cross, and a falling glove. Convinced it foretells salvation, he and his brother lead a small band on a quest to place an iron cross in a distant cathedral as an offering. Their journey takes them down a deep mine shaft, propelling them centuries forward into the 1980s, where they find themselves in modern New Zealand.
