Hard‑boiled reporter Larry Doyle (Robert Armstrong) over‑celebrates a work bonus, awakens on a train to St. Louis with only a buck in his pocket. He pawns his revolver, which later becomes the murder weapon, deepening his trouble. Meanwhile he courts a pretty stranger (Maxine Doyle), persuading her to pose as his wife.
