Sarah’s journey in “The Moogai” culminates in her embracing her cultural heritage as a source of strength against the oppressive forces threatening her family. Throughout the film, her disturbing visions of children with white eyes and the lurking monster symbolize the lasting trauma of the Aboriginal child removals and the destructive legacy of colonialism and racism. As Sarah’s mental and emotional state deteriorates, she begins to realize that the nightmare isn’t just a hallucination, but a reflection of deeper, historical wounds. The tension comes to a head when she confronts her fears and the literal representation of the child-snatching spirit—the Moogai—who has been stalking her family.

In the climax, Sarah fully embraces her ancestral roots, turning to her mother Ruth and her traditional knowledge to fight back against the supernatural menace. This act of cultural affirmation not only helps to banish the monster but also symbolizes reclaiming her identity and resisting the intergenerational trauma that has haunted her family. The monster's reveal, although less subtle than the buildup, underscores the importance of understanding and respecting Aboriginal traditions as a means to healing and protection.

Ultimately, the film's resolution sees Sarah saving her children and reconnecting with her roots, affirming that confronting the past and honoring her culture are essential steps toward breaking free from the cyclical trauma inflicted upon her community. The haunting visions fade as she stands strong, symbolizing hope that healing can begin once the scars of history are acknowledged and embraced. In this way, “The Moogai” is both a horror story and a poignant commentary on the resilience of Indigenous identity in the face of historical and spiritual horror.
