Cliff initially resigns his badge in disgust after the corrupt judge downgrades the charges against Cronin's gang to a misdemeanor. However, Cronin confronts him at the dance and threatens him, forcing the mayor to reappoint Cliff as marshal. Cliff accepts because he realizes that without a badge, he cannot legally protect Virginia and the town from Cronin's violence. His sense of responsibility compels him to stay and fight the corruption from within the system.

Judge Wainwright is on Cronin's payroll, meaning he is actively bribed to protect the sheriff's criminal operation. Rather than facing serious felony charges for the stagecoach ambush, the gang receives only a misdemeanor conviction with a small fine. This deliberate miscarriage of justice is what drives Cliff to abandon his badge, convinced that the legal system cannot be trusted to deliver justice.

Duke was hired by Cronin to provoke a gunfight with Cliff, but Cliff refuses to be baited and actually saves Duke's life when another patron tries to shoot him in the bar. This act of restraint and mercy earns Duke's respect, and he reciprocates by helping Cliff when he's outnumbered. Duke reveals Henderson's location to Cliff and becomes his deputy, choosing honor over the paid assassination job.

After Cliff saves Duke from being shot, Duke becomes an ally and reveals Henderson's exact hiding spot. Duke tells Cliff where Henderson is located because he now respects Cliff and wants to help bring down Cronin's operation. Cliff then tracks down Henderson and arrests him, forcing Cronin to imprison his own gang member.

Earlier, Duke was sent by Cronin to meet Henderson, giving him knowledge of the hideout.

Cronin orchestrates the release of Henderson specifically to kill both Cliff and Duke during the dance. Knowing they will be leaving the event, Cronin positions Henderson outside the dance hall as an ambush. This is Cronin's final attempt to eliminate his enemies in a staged confrontation where he can claim plausible deniability.

During the final gunfight at the jail, Duke is mortally wounded but uses his last breath to turn his shot toward Cronin, killing the main villain. Duke's sacrifice is the culmination of his redemption arc, from a paid killer to a heroic ally who chooses to eliminate the source of the town's corruption, even at the cost of his own life. His death ensures Cliff's survival and the downfall of Cronin.

Duke's earlier switch from assassin to ally foreshadows his ultimate act of redemption.

With Cronin and all his henchmen killed, the corrupt power structure collapses. The mayor vows to bring in a U.S. Attorney to investigate the corruption, signaling that the town will pursue legal reform. Without the sheriff's gang and their bribery network, the systematic corruption that defined Mesa City is effectively dismantled, though the victory comes at the cost of Duke's life.

After Duke's sacrifice and the defeat of Cronin, Cliff tells Virginia at the gravesite that he no longer wants to wear a badge. The constant battle against corruption and the loss of his friend have worn him down. He hints at heading south for a simpler life, seeking peace away from the violence and moral decay he encountered in Mesa City.

Virginia has been throughout the story the moral compass who encourages Cliff to stay and fight for the town. After the victory but with Duke's death casting a shadow, she asks to accompany Cliff on his journey south. Her choice represents hope for a new beginning and companionship, choosing love and a fresh start over remaining in a town scarred by corruption and violence.

Cliff proposes and supports the firearm ordinance to reduce Cronin's vulnerabilities and keep the peace. By banning civilians from carrying guns, Cliff limits the ability of Cronin's gang to arm themselves and provoke violence. This strategic move also ensures that only law officers (those under his command) can carry weapons, giving him tactical advantage and reducing random gun violence in the town.
