Gwynplaine, son of Lord Clancharlie, is forced by a vengeful king to wear a permanent grin carved into his face as punishment for his father's treachery. Adopted by a traveling showman, he becomes a popular circus idol. He falls in love with the blind Dea, while the king’s cruel jester seeks to ruin or corrupt him after the monarch’s death.
