In the early 20th century, Srinivasa Ramanujan (played by Dev Patel) struggled to make ends meet in poverty-stricken Madras, India. His life consisted of menial jobs that provided barely enough to survive. However, his employers soon recognized his extraordinary talent in mathematics, which exceeded the mundane accounting tasks they assigned him. Acknowledging his gifts, they encouraged him to share his groundbreaking ideas with the wider academic community, prompting him to reach out to esteemed mathematicians, including G.H. Hardy (played by Jeremy Irons), a brilliant mathematician at Cambridge University.

Hardy was profoundly impressed by Ramanujan’s intellect and invited him to join him at Cambridge, a decision that would challenge Ramanujan’s resilience as a theoretical mathematician. Leaving behind his beloved wife Janaki (played by), Ramanujan accepted the opportunity, vowing to keep in touch with her despite the vast distance separating them.

However, upon his arrival in England, Ramanujan faced the harsh realities of racial prejudice and cultural differences that complicated his adjustment to life at Cambridge. Despite these trials, Hardy recognized Ramanujan’s unparalleled abilities and dedicated himself to helping him refine his skills, ultimately leading to the publication of Ramanujan’s work in a prestigious journal. As time passed, Ramanujan’s health deteriorated due to tuberculosis, causing his letters to Janaki to go unanswered for extended periods.

As Ramanujan dived deeper into the world of abstract mathematics, fueled by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, the emotional toll of being away from his homeland weighed heavily on him. He dealt with challenging living conditions and a yearning for connection with his loved ones back in India. Meanwhile, Hardy remained steadfast in his belief in Ramanujan’s immense potential, unaware of the inner turmoil he was grappling with. Time unfolded like a canvas, and Janaki’s initial anticipation for a message from Ramanujan turned into worry, spurred by the silence that enveloped her.

Eventually, the mystery was unveiled, revealing a complex entanglement of family dynamics: Ramanujan’s mother was intercepting his letters, concealing them as if they were treasures, while she simultaneously withheld Janaki’s replies from him. Hardy, on the other hand, tirelessly endeavored to promote Ramanujan’s extraordinary mathematical talent by nominating him for a prestigious fellowship at Trinity College. Initially confronted with resistance from the academic establishment, which was clouded by biases, Hardy showed unwavering determination. He rallied influential allies within the college to support his cause, ultimately securing Ramanujan’s acceptance as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Regrettably, this victory arrived too late for Ramanujan, whose fragile health continued to decline under the relentless English winter and unsatisfactory living conditions. Sadly, when he was finally reunited with his family in India, the reality of his impending mortality loomed large, resulting from his untimely demise at the tender age of 32, just months after being acknowledged as a celebrated mathematician on the global stage.
