As Lizzie McGuire, portrayed by Hilary Duff, prepares for her junior-high graduation, she is enveloped by cherished memories of her closest friends, David “Gordo” Gordon, played by Adam Lamberg, and Miranda Sanchez. Unfortunately, Miranda has made the choice to skip the ceremony to visit family in Mexico City. On the day of graduation, as Lizzie stands on stage ready to celebrate with Gordo by her side, disaster strikes — she tumbles, inadvertently causing chaos for her fellow graduates. This mishap does not go unnoticed, inviting mockery from her younger brother Matt and her former best friend, Kate Sanders.

Following the graduation festivities, Lizzie and her classmates embark on an adventure to Rome, escorted by their strict future principal, Angela Ungermeyer, portrayed by Nia Vardalos. While most of their peers have opted for a relaxing getaway to a water park, Lizzie finds herself rooming with Kate, creating an awkward situation that forces them to confront their intricate history together in the vibrant streets of Rome.

During their visit to the iconic Trevi Fountain, Lizzie’s life takes an unexpected turn when she is approached by the charming Italian pop star Paolo Valisari, played by Giovanni Morassutti, who mistakenly identifies her as his former singing partner, Isabella Parigi. Desperate for help, Paolo urges Lizzie to meet him at the fountain the following day, revealing his urgent need for companionship in an upcoming performance. Unable to resist the allure of adventure, Lizzie pretends to be ill to escape the scrutiny of her classmates.

Paolo’s predicament reveals that he and Isabella were scheduled to perform at the renowned International Music Video Awards, but Isabella has since abandoned the project following their partnership fallout. Faced with the risk of hefty penalties if the concert is canceled, Paolo convinces Lizzie to stand in as his partner. Initially hesitant, Lizzie soon embraces the exhilarating experience, and in the process, begins to develop feelings for Paolo.

As Lizzie continues to feign her illness for the sake of her newfound role, a surprising twist occurs when Kate uncovers Lizzie’s secret and opts to support her instead of betraying her. Meanwhile, Principal Ungermeyer grows increasingly suspicious, prompting Gordo to take the fall for Lizzie, leading to his return home as a punishment. Lizzie is left shattered upon learning from Kate that Gordo sacrificed his own freedom to shield her from the fallout.

Back in the mix, young Matt reflects on his sister and unwittingly becomes embroiled in a backdrop of intrigue when he discovers Italian gossip websites featuring a stunning image of Isabella, who astonishingly resembles Lizzie. Convincing his parents that he is worried about Lizzie’s well-being, they decide to fly to Rome, aiming to uncover the mystery surrounding Lizzie’s clandestine escapades. En route, Gordo encounters Isabella, who is understandably shocked to find that someone is impersonating her. This unexpected meeting leads to an unlikely alliance as they uncover Paolo’s ulterior motives that could endanger Lizzie’s reputation.

On another front, Gordo’s roommate Ethan Craft accidentally reveals Lizzie’s presence at the International Music Video Awards to their classmates and family. With everyone converging on the ceremony, the tension builds. Backstage, Gordo and Isabella discover Lizzie preparing for her pivotal performance and urgently warn her about Paolo’s duplicitous plans. Initially skeptical, Lizzie becomes resolute to confront the situation after hearing Isabella’s compelling arguments. The iron-willed Ms. Ungermeyer, accompanied by Lizzie’s family and friends, bulldozes her way into the ceremony.

As the performance unfolds, Gordo and Isabella expose Paolo as a fraud, dismantling his facade. The public is privy to the truth, and with Paolo’s manager Sergei left in shock, Isabella introduces Lizzie to the adoring crowd. Together, they deliver a show-stopping rendition of “What Dreams Are Made Of.” With newfound confidence, Lizzie steals the spotlight as Isabella exits, leaving the audience captivated.

Later, the celebration continues at the hotel after-party, where Ms. Ungermeyer rolls back Gordo’s punishment and shares a flirtatious moment with Sergei. Although Lizzie’s parents inform her that she will be grounded for the rest of the summer, their pride shines through. As the evening progresses, Lizzie and Gordo take a moment to escape to the rooftop, where they vow to uphold their strong bond. Sharing a gentle kiss, they re-enter the party, already scheming about their next adventure together.

As the film culminates in a spectacular display of fireworks spelling “The End”, a playful animated Lizzie makes a whimsical appearance, nodding to the audience in a delightful homage to Tinker Bell.
