The Last Gangster

In 1927, gangster Joe Krozac returns from Europe with a new wife, Talya, who is unaware of his criminal past. He immediately reasserts his authority by ordering the assassinations of the Kile brothers, who have muscled into his territory. Three are killed, though Acey Kile survives. Talya discovers she is pregnant, tying their future to Krozac's turbulent world.

Talya discovers she is pregnant, linking her future to Krozac's criminal life. The pregnancy deepens her ties to him, even as she remains largely unaware of the full extent of his empire.

Krozac is sent to the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary for ten years for income tax evasion. During his absence, their son is born and Talya visits him with their newborn child. The long sentence underscores the cost of his criminal life.

Talya visits her husband in prison, bringing their baby to show him their new family. The visit marks a rare moment of personal connection amid his confinement. The mother and child symbolize a life beyond his criminal past.

Reporter Paul North schemes to humiliate Talya by placing a gun in the baby's hands for a photograph. Talya goes to his newspaper to plead to be left alone, but the editor refuses to stop the story. Paul, ashamed of his behavior, quits his job and begins a relationship with Talya.

Talya divorces Krozac and marries Paul, choosing a new life away from the gangster world. They move to start fresh under new names, severing ties with Krozac's criminal past. The divorce marks a painful, final break for Krozac.

When released after ten years, Krozac intends to reclaim his son, now named Paul Jr. His old associate Curly convinces him to take charge of the gang first, promising a smoother path to the boy.

Curly and the others lure Krozac back into the old gang, but their true aim is to extract where Krozac hid his money. Krozac resists torture, exposing the gang's treachery. The plan backfires when they realize the trap is about more than money.

The gang kidnaps the boy to apply pressure on Krozac to reveal the money's location. They drive off with the loot, only to be killed by the police, leaving father and son on foot.

Krozac is unable to convince the boy that he is his father, but they manage to get along on their journey home. Their bond develops slowly as they travel together on foot.

The boy is reunited with his mother and Paul, and Krozac experiences a change of heart. He chooses to leave the boy with his parents and step away from crime for good.

Acey Kile confronts Krozac at gunpoint, threatening to reveal the boy's true paternity to the press. To stop that, Krozac rushes him and shoots Acey.

Krozac dies at the end of the shootout with Acey, having sacrificed himself and denied Acey his sensational story. Acey dies as well, closing the gangster's era with a final, personal tragedy.
