Charlotte stabs Beau during the standoff because she sees an opportunity to stop him from killing Pete and taking the car keys. When Beau and Travis demand Pete's keys, Charlotte grabs a knife and attacks Beau in a desperate attempt to protect the others and prevent the robbers from escaping. With his vehicle stranded near the wrecked fuel truck and Charlie rapidly approaching, the salesman has no other means of defense. He lights the trail of gasoline he spilled during his desperate escape, creating an explosive barrier that stops Charlie's pursuit but ultimately leads to the sheriff's death.

The film concludes bleakly because the salesman's desperate survival attempts lead only to more death and destruction. Rather than escaping, he causes Charlie's death, wanders into the desert with mortal wounds, and dies alone. The bleak ending reinforces the film's harsh worldview where survival through morally compromised choices leads only to despair.
