Dostoevsky’s late masterpiece, The Karamazov Brothers, wrestles with profound questions of God, evil, morality and patricide. Czech director Petr Zelenka stages an inventive adaptation: a Prague troupe travels to Kraków to rehearse the novel as a play inside a crumbling steel‑works for the Closer to Life Festival. The roof is on the verge of collapse, so the actors wear safety helmets, and their sole regular audience is a factory laborer who watches rehearsals while his seven‑year‑old son recovers from a tragic accident.
