Captain Vinka Kovalenko deserts the Soviet Union, not out of ideology but because she is fed up with gender discrimination. American Captain Chuck Lockwood is assigned to persuade her that capitalism is superior, while she argues for communism’s merits. Their ideological clash turns romantic, all while the KGB pursues the defector through London.

Captain Vinka Kovalenko [Katharine Hepburn] lands a Soviet Air Force jet in West German territory, catching the United States Armed Forces by surprise and earning a prisoner’s status. Yet she is not on a covert mission, nor defection; she is driven by a personal grievance that weighs on her more than allegiance.
Capt. Chuck Lockwood [Bob Hope] wants nothing more than to fly to London to visit his wealthy fiancée Connie [Noelle Middleton]. A stern superior officer, Col. Newton Tarbell [Alan Gifford], denies his furlough and instead assigns Chuck the task of selling the virtues of America to the Soviet aviatrix, hoping she’ll switch sides for good. The carrot is a tempting incentive: a $100,000 bonus paid out to Vinka if Chuck can win her over.
Vinka finds herself tailed by her former lover, engineer Ivan Kropotkin [Robert Helpmann], a presence that complicates her new reality. She shows little interest in Chuck, even as he pursues a campaign to persuade her of American ideals. He portrays the United States as something worth embracing, while she remains wary, describing his bravado as a cover for deeper insecurities. When Connie unexpectedly visits, Vinka makes a dramatic entrance into Chuck’s room, wearing little more than a pajama top and her medals, a moment that unsettles Connie and reveals the fraught emotional undertones between them.
As the situation escalates, Vinka’s appearance shifts, her attire becoming more provocative as she navigates a tense, unfamiliar world. In a pivotal scene at a Russian restaurant, fellow comrades attempt to seize her, throwing the whole arrangement into chaos. A sleeping potion intended for Chuck accidentally ends up in Tarbell’s drink, complicating loyalties and plans. Meanwhile, Connie is mistaken for Vinka in a cloakroom and taken captive, further blurring the lines between duty and desire.
The Russians misread Vinka’s motives and accuse her of treason, pushing the story toward a high-stakes confrontation. Chuck engineers a daring aerial escape, and in the mêlée the two of them find themselves drawn to one another. For Vinka, money and prestige pale beside genuine connection, while Connie’s anxieties about credibility and security intensify the emotional stakes.
As the pair prepare to depart for America, a Russian agent rushes forward with the promised $100,000 check, but Vinka declines the windfall, choosing integrity over payoff. Yet Lockwood makes a last bid for the prize, grabbing the money as they race toward a new life, leaving the old suspicions and loyalties behind.
