After a police raid on a Canal Street clothing workshop, the protagonist is arrested and processed. He is an undocumented migrant, holding no legal status in Hong Kong—where he once swam—nor in the United States, where he entered as a stowaway to slip past metal detectors that would reveal the bullets still lodged in his body.
