A green mare brings wealth to horse dealer Haudouin. After his death, the 1870 war erupts. Neighbor Zèphe Maloret denounces Haudouin’s son Honoré, a rebellious youth, to the Prussians. A Prussian NCO assaults Honoré’s mother while he hides under the bed, turning long‑standing resentment into hatred. A missing letter that records the incident fuels the feud.
