The Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting

Jim refuses to stop because he suffers from PTSD from his traumatic encounter with the Hitcher fifteen years earlier. When he sees blood dripping from the RV and realizes someone may be in danger, his trauma response kicks in and he cannot bring himself to stop, despite Maggie's insistence.

Earlier in the film, Jim is shown to be on edge during the drive, and his suspension for excessive force hints at his unresolved psychological issues.

The Hitcher cuts off his own finger as part of his plan to frame Maggie for all his murders. By making it appear that he was also a victim, he manipulates the police into believing Maggie is the perpetrator. He kills the clerk and stages the scene to support his false narrative.

The Hitcher throws the key and revolver to Maggie after slaughtering the entire police escort to make it appear that she killed them. This is his final attempt to frame her for his crimes before she escapes. The staged evidence would have convinced authorities that Maggie was a dangerous fugitive.

Earlier, the Hitcher successfully framed Maggie at the gas station by manipulating the crime scene.

After hijacking the 18-wheeler truck and killing its driver during the highway confrontation, the Hitcher uses the stolen truck to race ahead and reach the Esteridge residence first. He kills Captain Esteridge and his wife before Jim and Maggie arrive, setting up the deadly ambush.

Maggie spots a small aircraft at a nearby airfield and uses it as a weapon to attack the Hitcher's tanker truck. She flies the plane directly into the tanker, causing a massive explosion that injures the Hitcher and destroys his vehicle. This is her improvised assault during her escape and revenge attempt.

When the police arrive, the Hitcher immediately accuses Maggie of trying to kill him, manipulating them into thinking he is the victim. The officers free the Hitcher and shoot Maggie in the leg as she approaches the truck, believing she is the aggressor. This allows the Hitcher to escape temporarily.

Jim recognizes the Hitcher from his traumatic past encounter and becomes overwhelmed by fear and panic. Even though the Hitcher is making small talk and joking, Jim's PTSD triggers an extreme reaction and he forces the Hitcher out of the vehicle, which proves to be a pivotal mistake.

The film establishes early on that Jim is deeply affected by his previous encounter with the Hitcher.

After the police are killed by the Hitcher and he is restrained to the truck, Maggie walks to a safe distance and fires at the tanker, igniting its fuel. The resulting explosion kills the Hitcher. This is her final act of revenge for Jim's death and her own ordeal, fulfilling Jim's dying wish to stop the Hitcher.

Jim told Maggie to kill the Hitcher before he died at the Esteridge house.

The Hitcher has a personal obsession with Jim from their previous encounter fifteen years ago. When he spots Jim again on this Texas road, he fixates on tormenting both Jim and Maggie as part of his sadistic pattern of psychological manipulation and framing innocent people for his crimes.

After being knocked unconscious and placed inside an abandoned water tower, Maggie eventually finds a way to escape the collapsing structure. She then steals the Hitcher's 18-wheeler truck that he had left behind and uses it to drive away, continuing her survival and counterattack against the Hitcher.
