What Happens in The Handsome Suit: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Handsome Suit (2008) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Takuro, Muga Tsukaji is an overweight restaurant owner who wins people over with his delicious dinners, yet remains unlucky in love because of his looks, his fashion sense, and some bad habits. He longs for his part-time waitress Hiroko, Keiko Kitagawa, who fell for his warm-hearted nature but rejects him, convinced that he only cares about appearances.

A distraught Takuro is given the opportunity to try out a new invention, the Handsome Suit, which will make him good-looking, tall, and deep-voiced. He puts it on and transforms into Annin Hikariyama, Muga Tsukaji, quickly becoming a supermodel.

He meets Raika, Mayumi Sada, a gorgeous, prestigious model who is drawn to him as she works and aggressively seduces him. He revels in the attention, indulges in kissing Raika, and almost falls in love with her.

Annin also appears before Hiroko, and his handsome face and seductive overtures stir Hiroko's stubborn heart.

In contrast to Takuro, Annin’s polished image and high-status demeanor yield a different kind of treatment from others, highlighting how much looks can shape perception and opportunity in society. This new dynamic forces Takuro to confront a hard truth about himself and the world around him, especially when he meets the homely but sweet Motoe.

He is faced with a choice.

The Handsome Suit Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The Handsome Suit (2008): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Hiroko reject Takuro even though she likes him?

Hiroko genuinely falls for Takuro's warm-hearted nature and the kindness he shows others, but she rejects him because she suspects his affection is only skin-deep. She believes Takuro is attracted to her appearance rather than who she really is, which mirrors her own insecurity about being valued only for looks. This creates the emotional tension that drives Takuro to seek the Handsome Suit.

Foreshadowing: Early scenes show Hiroko working as Takuro's waitress, where she observes his generous nature but also notices how he presents himself.

  • hiroko rejection
  • takuro love
  • appearances vs personality
  • genuine feelings
Q2

How does the Handsome Suit transform Takuro?

The Handsome Suit is a mysterious invention that physically transforms the wearer into an idealized version of themselves. When Takuro puts it on, he becomes Annin Hikariyama, a tall, handsome man with a deep voice who instantly becomes a supermodel. The transformation is immediate and dramatic, giving him a completely new appearance that commands attention and opens doors that were previously closed to him.

  • handsome suit
  • transformation
  • annin hikariyama
  • supermodel
Q3

Why does Takuro agree to try the Handsome Suit?

Takuro agrees because he is desperate to change his romantic fortunes. Despite being beloved by customers for his delicious cooking, he remains unlucky in love due to his looks, fashion sense, and bad habits. After Hiroko rejects him, he sees the suit as his only opportunity to compete for her affection on equal footing, believing that changing his appearance will finally give him a chance at love.

Foreshadowing: The opening scenes establish Takuro's loneliness and unsuccessful attempts at romance.

  • takuro motivation
  • desperate for love
  • appearance change
  • romantic prospects
Q4

Why does Raika pursue Annin so aggressively?

Raika is drawn to Annin because he embodies the glamorous, high-status ideal she knows in the modeling world. As a prestigious top model herself, she responds to someone who matches her level of attractiveness and social standing. Her aggressive pursuit reflects both her confident personality and the superficial nature of the world she inhabits, where appearance dictates attraction and opportunity.

  • raika attraction
  • modeling world
  • superficial beauty
  • status
Q5

How does Takuro notice people treating him differently as Annin?

As Annin, Takuro experiences a dramatic shift in how society treats him, he receives immediate attention, doors open for him, and people respond to him with respect and admiration. This stark contrast to his previous treatment as an overweight cook shocks him and reveals how deeply appearances influence social opportunities and judgments. The experience forces him to confront the superficial basis of many human interactions.

Foreshadowing: Early scenes show customers loving his food but his romantic prospects remaining poor.

  • societal treatment
  • appearance based judgment
  • social opportunities
  • superficiality
Q6

Who is Motoe and why is she important to the story?

Motoe is a homely but sweet person Takuro meets after becoming Annin. She contrasts sharply with Raika's glamorous world by offering genuine warmth and authenticity. Through Motoe, Takuro begins to understand what real affection might look like beyond surface beauty. She represents the alternative path, one based on sincere connection rather than superficial attraction, and becomes instrumental in his ultimate decision.

  • motoe character
  • genuine connection
  • authentic love
  • inner beauty
Q7

What is the main choice Takuro must make in the film?

Takuro faces a choice between continuing life as Annin, chasing social validation through his attractive appearance, or revealing his true self to pursue sincere relationships. He must decide whether to value the shallow but easy admiration that comes with being handsome, or risk rejection by being honest about who he really is. The decision tests what he truly wants in love and life.

  • identity choice
  • authentic self
  • honest relationship
  • self-acceptance
Q8

Why does Hiroko react differently to Annin than to Takuro?

When Annin appears with his handsome face and seductive approach, Hiroko's feelings are stirred despite her better judgment. The attraction she feels challenges her earlier rejection of Takuro, showing that she is not immune to the allure of appearances, even though she claimed to value inner qualities. This creates internal conflict and shows the complexity of her feelings.

Foreshadowing: Her earlier rejection was based on suspicion about Takuro's motives, not lack of attraction.

  • hiroko attraction
  • handsome appearance temptation
  • conflicting feelings
Q9

What does the film say about appearances and genuine connection?

The film critiques how society judges people based on looks rather than character. Through Takuro's dual experience, it shows that attraction based solely on appearance is hollow, while genuine connection requires honesty and vulnerability. The story suggests that true love cannot flourish without being your authentic self, even though appearances initially open doors.

Foreshadowing: The contrast between how people treat Takuro versus Annin clearly illustrates this theme.

  • appearance vs personality
  • authentic love
  • society judgment
  • self-worth
Q10

Why does Takuro enjoy being Annin so much?

Takuro revels in the attention because he has never experienced it before. As an overweight cook with bad fashion sense, he was overlooked and rejected romantically despite his many positive qualities. The sudden flood of admiration and opportunities is intoxicating, especially since it requires no personal growth or risk, just putting on a suit. His enjoyment reflects a deep-seated desire for validation that he has been denied.

Foreshadowing: Opening scenes establish his loneliness and unsuccessful love life.

  • attention seeking
  • validation
  • ego boost
  • desire for acceptance
Q11

Why does Takuro nearly fall in love with Raika?

Takuro nearly falls in love with Raika because she represents everything he believed he could never have, glamour, beauty, and social prestige. The attention from such a desirable woman validates his transformation and makes him feel worthy. The attraction is intoxicating precisely because it seems to prove that his new appearance has solved his problems, even though their connection is largely superficial.

  • raika temptation
  • superficial attraction
  • validation through beauty
Q12

What does the story suggest really matters in love?

The story suggests that genuine love requires honesty and authenticity rather than superficial attraction. While appearances can open doors, they cannot sustain meaningful relationships. The person one loves should accept them for who they truly are, not for a perfected facade. Takuro's ultimate choice reflects this message: choosing to be seen as his authentic self is more valuable than living a glamorous lie.

Foreshadowing: Motoe represents the possibility of love that transcends appearance.

  • true love
  • authenticity
  • honest relationship
  • inner qualities matter
