Jan Werich

The film adapts Jaroslav Hašek’s raucous satirical novel while translating Josef Lada’s iconic illustrations into lively puppet animation, a task that proved one of Trnka’s greatest creative challenges. Trnka considered the final episode his most successful work, yet each of the three parts shines, especially in how the indolent, self‑serving anecdotes of the layabout Švejk are rendered through inventive cut‑out animation.
