While wandering the forest, a woodcutter discovers a golden fern whose seed transforms into a beautiful woman, and the two fall deeply in love. After becoming drunk at a village feast, he enlists in the army. A fairy presents him with a magical shirt and demands a vow that he will never abandon it. On the battlefield he meets the colonel’s daughter, and to win her affection he must undertake a series of daring feats.
