Fourteen‑year‑old Shizuko dreams of drawing manga in Tokyo to escape poverty. After her father leaves, her mother takes in a lover who calls himself “Father,” bans Shizuko’s gritty manga as “trash.” When he learns she is pregnant by a boy, he beats her while her mother slides into apathy. Shizuko turns to art, creating gentle, caring characters.
