How The Girl in the Trunk (2024) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
The ending of The Girl in the Trunk is intentionally bizarre and open to interpretation, but at its core, it shows Amanda finally reclaiming her agency after a terrifying ordeal. Throughout the film, we see Amanda’s journey from a girl manipulated into an unwanted marriage to someone desperately trying to escape her captor. When her father arrives in the helicopter to rescue her, the situation takes a bizarre turn. He initially aims to save her with a gun and money, but then suddenly hesitates, overwhelmed by her disobedience and betrayal. This moment hints at the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of authority and family loyalty.
The kidnapper’s resurrection and his bizarre, zombie-like appearance, along with the unpredictable chaos that unfolds—including his driving away with Amanda again and the helicopter crashing—add to the film’s surreal tone. Amanda’s cleverness eventually shines when she manages to trap and lock up the kidnapper in a trunk with a rattlesnake, turning the tables in a symbolic gesture of finally taking control. The policewoman, thought to be dead, reappears to rescue Amanda and bring the chaos to an end.
In the final moments, Amanda is no longer the helpless girl in the trunk. She shows courage and defiance by telling the kidnapper to get into the trunk herself, locking him away with the snake. This act symbolizes her reclaiming her power, facing her fears, and asserting her independence from the manipulations and threats she endured. Her escape signifies that she is ready to move forward, no longer trapped by her past or others’ control, and prepared to face whatever life holds on her own terms. The film’s ending leaves viewers with a sense of ambiguity and surrealism, emphasizing her transformation from a victim into a woman who has finally taken her fate into her own hands.
