The Friendship Game (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The ending of "The Friendship Game" centers around the idea that the mysterious artifact, known as the Friendship Game, is a supernatural device that manipulates reality through the multiverse. Throughout the film, the friends—Cotton, Susan, Courtney, and Robbie—are manipulated by the game, which feeds on their deepest insecurities, wishes, and regrets. As they go through different versions of Cotton’s death and their own memories, it becomes clear that the game is not merely testing their friendship but is actively distorting their perceptions of reality, pulling them into alternate timelines.

In the climax, the friends confront their individual fears and regrets, with each of them experiencing different traumatic memories — some of which seem to be manipulated or false, designed to break their bonds. Cotton’s death, for instance, is revealed to be a product of the game’s twisted influence—it’s not clear if she actually died, or if this is another illusion. Susan, Courtney, and Robbie each see different versions of what happened to Cotton, which shows how the game distorts their understanding of reality. Ultimately, Susan manages to see through the manipulation when she claims she still cares for her friends, and she emphasizes that their friendship is more important than the test.
