On a heavy, rainy night, two couples—the Dr. Ed Marcy and Tina, and Rose and Peter Angel—are brought to the station by a hotel bus. Alone in the cabin, they quarrel over who cheated at cards and who should bear the blame for being kicked out of the hotel.
Sometime later the train conductor calls on Dr. Marcy because a woman is gravely ill. He initially refuses, saying he hasn’t practiced medicine in a long time, but the conductor’s insistence wins him over and he goes to the cabin to help.
The dying woman reveals a plan that sets the story in motion: she had journeyed to see her son, Philipp Bellows in New York, whom she hadn’t seen for fourteen years and who stands to inherit a vast fortune from her estranged ex-husband. As the woman dies, Marcy seizes her photographs and a necklace and hatches a bold scheme: Tina will impersonate Philipp’s mother. Tina, who has longed to quit the gang, accepts the offer and a new chapter begins for her.
Tina travels to the estate in Long Island, New York where Philipp lives under the guardianship of Grant Arnold and the care of Nurse Alice. Philipp is blind from an airplane crash two years earlier and does not realize Tina is an impostor. He welcomes her with warmth and asks her to stay, forming a fragile, touching bond as she settles into her role as a mother figure.
As Philipp grows attached, he reaches into his future and asks Grant to provide Tina with roughly $50,000 to live more comfortably. Grant tears up the cheque, aware of Tina’s deception and wary of Philipp’s fragile health. He keeps the truth to himself, conscious that he is not long for this world, and advises Tina to shield Philipp from stress.
Meanwhile, Marcy arrives at the house, aiming to coerce Tina into doing something she doesn’t want to do. But in a cruel twist of fate, Philipp dies that very night, leaving the growing impostor situation even more precarious.
The next day Marcy reappears, demanding payment or a sign of progress. Grant reveals that he has already warned the authorities by uncovering that Marcy is a disbarred doctor wanted by the police. Marcy tries to escape, but the revelation hanging over him brings a sense of closure to Tina, who has discovered a new joy in giving. In the end, Grant offers Tina a home, and she accepts with a quiet embrace, stepping toward an uncertain but hopeful future.
