A French bourgeois couple, François and Simone Thévenot, find themselves in an unexpected situation when they accompany François’s colleague, Don Rafael Acosta (the ambassador from the South American nation of Miranda), and Simone’s sister, Florence, to a dinner hosted by the Sénéchals. Upon arrival, they are met with surprise from Alice Sénéchal, who mistakenly anticipated their presence the following evening and has no meal prepared. In a twist of hospitality, the group invites Alice to dine with them at a nearby inn.

Once they reach the inn, they are greeted by locked doors. After knocking, a waitress reluctantly allows them to enter, explaining that the restaurant is now under new management. Inside, an eerie atmosphere envelops them as they discover the lack of diners and puzzlingly low menu prices. The situation takes a darker turn when they hear distressing wails from an adjoining room, later realizing they have stumbled into a vigil for the recently deceased manager. A hurried departure ensues when they learn the coroner is on their way.

The following day, Acosta, François, and Alice’s husband, Henri, gather at the Mirandan embassy to deliberate on the gains from a substantial cocaine transaction. In a moment of erratic impulsiveness, Acosta targets a clockwork-animal toy, shooting it with a rifle, startling a nearby vendor—revealed to be a member of a Maoist Mirandan terrorist group that has been pursuing him relentlessly.

Days later, the friends attempt to enjoy lunch at the Sénéchals’, but instead, Henri and his wife sneak away to the garden for a rendezvous. Their absence raises suspicions among the others, leading to a frantic conclusion that the Sénéchals may be evading police arrest related to drug trafficking, which compels them to flee.

Upon returning from the garden, the Sénéchals are greeted by an unexpected visitor—a bishop donned in their gardener’s attire. Their acceptance of him shifts dramatically when he reappears in his religious robes, prompting them to treat him with reverence. The bishop shares a tragic childhood backstory in which his parents were victims of poisoning, leaving a shadow of unresolved mystery.

Meanwhile, the women encounter a teahouse running low on supplies, ultimately only able to offer water as they await service. Amid this lackluster setting, a soldier shares a poignant flashback of his upbringing, marked by his father’s sternness following his mother’s death and a dark turn of events when accusations of murder arise.

In a clandestine meeting at Acosta’s apartment, Simone engages in an affair, only to be interrupted by her husband, leading to a hasty exit. As Acosta deals with the fallout of their moment together, a visit from a terrorist seeking revenge escalates into a tense confrontation where he attempts to seduce her, only to be rebuffed.

As the group gathers once more at the Sénéchal residence for dinner, their meal is abruptly interrupted by the arrival of an army regiment, which is called for an emergency drill. The unusual interruption sees Henri dreaming of a chaotic stage performance where tension brews as the audience grows displeased with the actors’ unpreparedness, while François envisions a fierce argument leading to violence involving Acosta at a dinner.

In an unexpected turn, the bishop leaves his gardening duties to grant absolution to a dying man who confesses to having murdered a couple he once served due to their mistreatment. A shocking revelation strikes the bishop when he realizes the couple were, in fact, his own parents—culminating in an eerie twist where he grants absolution and then mercilessly shoots the dying man.

Later, the unfolding events conclude with the arrest of the Sénéchals, the Thévenots, and Acosta for suspected drug trafficking. Amidst surreal dreams and charges, a ghostly figure of a former inspector seems to influence the processes of justice, leading to an ordered release from custody—though the Minister’s reasons remain distorted in the chaos of jet engine noise.

Finally, a haunting image of the six individuals walking silently along a desolate country road brings the narrative full circle, encapsulating the complex intertwining of their lives and the shadows of their decisions.
