Ethel lives in a squalid factory town with an abusive husband and unsupportive parents. After the death of her young son in a tragic accident, she abandons her marriage and the town, determined to discover a worthwhile life at any cost. Her resolve sets her on a perilous path away from home.

With no education or work experience, Ethel takes a low-wage job to survive. A client at the department store invites her to model dresses there, hinting at a life beyond her means. The opportunity soon leads her to become an escort for wealthy clients on the side.

Martin informs Ethel that Castleman intends to murder Nick if the rebellion rumors prove true. Ethel becomes increasingly disillusioned with Castleman's ruthlessness, realizing how high the stakes have become. She continues the uneasy alliance, torn between love and survival.

Castleman arrives at the home intending to kill both Ethel and Martin. In a tense confrontation, Ethel wrestles for the gun and is shot, while Martin shoots and kills Castleman. The violent turn ends Castleman's scheme and tests their bond under fire.

Wounded but alive, Ethel convalesces in bed as two reporters predict she will try once more to leave her roughshod hometown when she recovers. The outlook hints at a fragile chance for a fresh start beyond the town's grip. The ending leaves her future uncertain but hopeful.
