Set in 1786, a cruel lord leaves many masterless samurai, including pampered Iyemon forced to make umbrellas. He hires thugs to feign sword skill and the masseur Takuetsu (Sawamura Sounosuke) to disgrace his wife (Kyoko Mikage). The masseur warns Oiwa; she tries poison and self‑mutilation, and in a grim climax slits her throat, swearing revenge.
