Shot in Chicago and finished in 1959, Edward O. Bland’s film is a polemical essay on music, race and the alleged “death of jazz.” It became a landmark of Black cinema, foretelling later unrest, and includes the only known Sun Ra footage from Chicago, plus black‑and‑white scenes of tenor John Gilmore and the Arkestra in city nightclubs.
