The story opens with a cruel wealthy landowner who threatens to evict an elderly woman unless her niece, who lives with her, marries his son. The niece, devoted to her aunt, is prepared to sacrifice herself, but a chance escape appears when a destitute young man is taken in. He turns out to be a skilled jockey and hopes to win the $3,000 fair prize to save the farm.
