In 1934, chess champion Diego Padilla encounters French journalist Marianne Latour, and a romance blossoms between them. Following the Spanish Civil War, Marianne persuades Diego to relocate to France with their daughter. However, their newfound peace is shattered when Diego is wrongly accused of espionage by the Nazis and imprisoned in an SS facility. To survive the harsh conditions, he must rely on the unexpected assistance of Colonel Maier, who shares a passion for chess.
