Casey pushes the Western Mail through drifting waters and mud, testing the engine's endurance. The train fights the marshy terrain as water threatens to bog it down. Casey keeps a steady pace to avoid delays.

An unexpected cow crossing forces Casey to slow and navigate carefully, using momentum to keep the train on course. The delay tightens his schedule and raises the stakes for every mile yet to come. He fights to maintain speed without sacrificing safety.

A villain ties a woman to the tracks, hoping to derail the mission. Casey risks his own safety to intervene and free her, foiling the kidnapper’s plan. The rescuer act heightens the danger and reveals the criminal's intent.

A second villain destroys a span of tracks on a trestle, forcing Casey to improvise. He must guide the Western Mail across the gorge where the rails disappear, relying on nerve and skill. The obstacle tests his resolve as he races to stay on schedule.

With the tracks missing, the train plunges into a dry desert canyon. Casey keeps the engine steady, braving heat and harsh terrain as he presses toward the next checkpoint. The journey demands all of his focus beyond mere speed.

A gang of criminals climbs onto the cab in an attempt to rob the train. Casey fights them off, using the locomotive as shield and weapon while maintaining control. The confrontation heightens danger on the open rails.

To make up lost time, Casey runs the engine beyond its mechanical limits. He plows through two tunnels, the second erupting after the first didn't, and smoke fills the cab. The strain shows as he pushes the machine to the brink.

A five-mile sign passes by as the engine strains and the rails begin to melt under heat and pressure. Casey remains focused on repairs, ignoring the danger as the track threatens to fail. The meltdown makes the crossing even more perilous.

With repairs unfinished, Casey drives the Western Mail down a hill toward a slow, double-headed freight hauled by engines No. 77 and No. 5. The conductor realizes the danger and screams a warning, but Casey cannot hear him over the roar of the engine. The two trains collide in a spectacular explosion.

Even as the wreck burns, Casey arrives aboard what remains of his collapsing engine at the destination. The station porter is briefly disappointed at the delay, but relief follows as the train pulls in. The miracle of arrival reaffirms his resolve.

Casey's pocket watch bears the inscription 'On Time. Almost' signaling that victory comes at a price. The triumph is tempered by the near-miss and the realization that time really is everything in his world. He completes the run, battered but victorious.
