The Anthrax Attacks (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The FBI's investigation into the Anthrax attacks eventually led to the conclusion that Bruce Ivins, a scientist at a U.S. bio-defense lab, was responsible. After years of complex scientific analysis, including genome sequencing that matched the spores in the letters to Ivins' research samples, the evidence pointed towards him. Ivins had a history of mental health struggles, and his manipulative behavior, as well as his obsession with codes and revenge against a fraternity girl, seemed to fit a picture of someone capable of such an act. Before he could be formally charged, Ivins took his own life in 2008, just as the FBI was about to arrest him. The authorities officially declared him the sole culprit, attributing the attacks to Ivins' fear that his research would be shut down, and claiming he used his knowledge to create the anthrax as a weapon. However, many critics and experts remain skeptical, arguing that the evidence against Ivins isn’t conclusive and that the FBI’s rush to close the case may have overlooked the possibility of his innocence. The documentary leaves viewers contemplating whether justice was truly served or if the true perpetrator might still be out there, hidden behind the cloud of official conclusions and incomplete evidence. In the end, the case illustrates how difficult it can be to unravel the truth in the face of scientific uncertainty, government secrecy, and human fallibility.
