In the crowded streets of New York, an elderly Orthodox tailor struggles against the mounting weight of circumstance. Morris Mishkin has lived a life of modest faith and honest work, but now finds himself trapped between physical decline and financial desperation. His wife, Fanny, grows weaker by the day, her heart condition demanding medicines he cannot afford, while his own failing back makes even the simplest tasks agonizing. Into this quiet desperation steps an impossible visitor — a mysterious Black man named Alexander Levine who appears in Morris's kitchen with an extraordinary claim.
