After serving a grueling 15-month combat tour in Iraq, Adam Schumann finally returns home to Kansas. He is welcomed by his loving wife, Saskia, and their two young children, a daughter and an infant son who was born during Adam's deployment.

Back home, Adam begins to experience intense symptoms of PTSD, including nightmares and flashbacks about his time in combat. Despite the support from his wife, he struggles to cope with his unresolved trauma.

Saskia encourages Adam to seek help from the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is overwhelmed and under-resourced. Adam's journey to find proper treatment highlights the struggles many veterans face when reintegrating into civilian life.

Adam reconnects with two friends from his service, Solo Aieti and Billy Waller, who also struggle with their own demons. These relationships provide Adam with moments of solace amid his overwhelming guilt and grief.

Amidst the turmoil of war, Billy Waller takes his own life in front of his fiancée after being abandoned by her. This event deepens Adam's sense of loss and responsibility, highlighting the severe impacts of PTSD on veterans.

Adam grapples with the guilt of not being able to save his fellow soldier, Michael Emory, during an intense firefight. Michael, who was injured and left with severe disabilities, later expresses gratitude to Adam for his efforts, complicating Adam's feelings of guilt.

Deep-seated guilt burdens Adam regarding the death of Sergeant First Class James Doster, who took Adam's place on patrol one day. When Doster's Humvee hit an IED, he was left behind and perished, further intensifying Adam's survivor's guilt.

Towards the end of the film, Amanda, Doster's grieving widow, learns the truth about her husband's death. Through conversations with Saskia and Adam, she gains closure, marking a turning point in the healing process.

Solo Aieti suffers from extreme PTSD and memory loss, preventing him from re-enlisting for another tour. He becomes involved with a group of drug dealers, which exacerbates his downward spiral following the war.

In a bid to save his friend, Adam intervenes when Solo's situation worsens. He helps Solo escape the life of drug dealing by purchasing a Greyhound bus ticket for him to California, directing him to a rehabilitation center specializing in PTSD treatment.

After supporting Solo, Adam himself embarks on a path to recovery by entering a rehabilitation center for PTSD. This vital step marks a significant turning point in Adam's journey towards healing and reconnection with his family.

After completing his rehabilitation, Adam returns to his family, who await him in their home. His return signifies a hopeful new chapter for Adam and his loved ones as they all navigate the challenges left from his time in combat.
