Tarka (1989) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Tarka (1989), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Akshay [Shankar Nag] escapes from jail and, while being chased by the police, stumbles into the house of Sudha [Vanitha Vasu], a high school classmate. He hides in a closet just as Inspector Cowry knocks on the door, and there he discovers the lifeless body of her husband, Ritwik Kumar [Devaraj], dumped inside. The officer delivers the grim news that Kumar’s plane to Calcutta crashed, taking all on board. Sudha absorbs the blow with visible shock, then breaks down. After the officer departs, she confides in Akshay that she killed her husband and needs protection from the growing danger around them. Together, they quietly plot to discard the evidence, moving the body to an abandoned well on her estate.

Sudha’s confession unfolds in a fractured, retrospective sequence that explains the motive. Kumar, a man plagued by schizophrenia, grows suspicious of his wife’s fidelity and cannot consummate their marriage. He hallucinates scenes of Sudha with male friends, including Shashidhar, a man she frequently meets. In an attempt to catch them in the act, Kumar stages a fake trip to Calcutta and returns home to find them talking. Enraged, he attacks Sudha; a fatal turn of events leads to his death, and Sudha—convinced that Shashidhar killed him—drags his murder into a cloud of doubt. Shashidhar himself is later struck by a police vehicle while trying to report the matter and ends up in a hospital.

In the present, Akshay, disguise intact as Harish, moves through the mourners and presents himself as a supportive friend to Sudha. Meanwhile, Sudha begins receiving ominous ransom calls from a blackmailer who demands a portion of Kumar’s property and threatens to reveal the truth of the murder and the disposal if her money isn’t delivered. The pressure escalates until the blackmailer, who turns out to be Cowry, is eventually tracked down. He reveals that he witnessed Sudha and Akshay discarding Kumar’s body in the estate well and used that knowledge to blackmail her. A deeper investigation at the crime scene confirms that the weapon used was a knife, pointing investigators toward Akshay, who ultimately confesses to the murder.

Akshay’s narrative about his past intensifies the motive: his girlfriend Smitha was murdered by Kumar after she humiliated him due to his irrational behavior, and Akshay blames Kumar for her death. A few days later, Akshay makes a daring escape from prison and heads straight to Kumar’s house, where he assassinates Kumar by slitting his throat, sealing his own vendetta. He then seizes the moment of chaos in the house between Kumar and Sudha, killing Kumar unseen by Sudha. The finale sees Akshay and Sudha arrested and brought to jail, but the danger is far from over as Akshay fights the authorities and manages another escape, keeping the tension alive as the story closes.
