The film follows childhood in wartime Japan, focusing on Takeshi, the bright son of a fisherman who rules the schoolyard as a bully. When his cousin arrives to escape bombing raids, Takeshi first welcomes him but soon begins to torment him as well. By the story’s end, Takeshi’s grip on leadership crumbles.
