The opening film of Bill Douglas’s celebrated trilogy returns to his bleak childhood in early‑1940s Scotland. As an eight‑year‑old living on the breadline in a destitute mining village with his half‑brother and a sick grandmother, his sole refuge is the cinema, which he finances by collecting and returning empty jam jars.
