The 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge failure was captured on film by camera‑shop owner Barney Elliott. His 16 mm Kodachrome footage, shot at 16 fps, shows driver Leonard Coatsworth exiting his car just before the deck twists and collapses. In 1998 the Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry for its cultural and historical significance. Although originally color, most copies are black‑and‑white newsreel transfers, often shown at the wrong speed, and the clip remains a staple teaching tool for engineering, architecture, and physics students.
