Sybil meets her father Willard and stepmother Freida in a New York cafeteria. She explains that old problems have returned and wants to see a psychiatrist. Willard disapproves of psychiatry, and Sybil dissociates, with Peggy emerging and breaking a glass.

That night, a call from someone identifying as Vickie warns that Sybil is about to jump from a hotel window. Dr. Wilbur rescues her, but Sybil denies knowing Vickie and instantly shifts into Peggy, a younger, furious personality. The incident reveals the severity of Sybil's dissociative symptoms.
