At the turn of the 20th century, Joosep Toots returns home from Russia, where he has studied modern agricultural techniques, and resolves to reform his father’s farm, Ülesoo. Simultaneously, he competes with his friend Kiir for the love of Teele, who insists she will marry only a farmer. To match Joosep, Kiir also heads to Russia to learn farming.
