Bookkeeper Sam Wilson is told by his employer Malcolm Jarvis that the firm is shutting down and his job will disappear. Jarvis proposes a grim deal: he plans to kill himself but wants Sam to stage it as a murder so his wife and son can collect the life‑insurance payout. Sam initially refuses, yet when he returns to find Jarvis already dead, he feels compelled to carry out the arrangement.
