Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The documentary concludes with Leo Baker making a powerful decision to prioritize his mental health and true self over the fame he could achieve by competing in the Olympics. After years of struggling with his gender identity, Leo chooses to step away from the Olympic team and undergo gender-reconstruction surgery, supported wholeheartedly by his girlfriend Melissa. This decision underscores a vital message: happiness and authenticity should come before external validation or societal expectations. Following his transition, Leo begins a new chapter by establishing a skateboarding academy called GLUE, which aims to create an inclusive space for all genders and sexualities, celebrating diversity rather than conforming to societal norms. The film also highlights the challenges queer athletes face, including limited support and endorsement opportunities, emphasizing the need for greater inclusion and representation in sports worldwide. By the end, Leo’s story shows that embracing one’s identity can lead to true fulfillment, inspiring viewers to prioritize their well-being and authenticity over external approval. His success in attracting sponsorship after coming out as a trans man demonstrates that being true to oneself ultimately opens doors, proving that genuine acceptance starts with self-love and courage. The film leaves viewers with a message that living authentically is the real victory, and that the pursuit of happiness and self-acceptance is more meaningful than any medal or recognition.
