In 1969, a Golden retriever named Buddy is launched into space with a backpack in a space capsule by his owner, David. The capsule malfunctions soon after departure, shocking Buddy and mutating his DNA, giving him superpowers as he drifts away from Earth. The event sets Buddy on an extraordinary journey that begins beyond our planet.

The capsule malfunction mutates Buddy's DNA, granting him superpowers. He is carried away from Earth by the capsule, and years later he remains floating, frozen and alone in space. The mutation seeds a return to Earth decades later under extraordinary circumstances.

Fifty years later, the capsule reenters Earth's atmosphere and crash-lands in the fictional town of Glenfield. Buddy awakens in a dumpster, disoriented and trying to understand his new surroundings. The town is immediately confronted with an otherworldly visitor.

Buddy attempts to speak with a human but is met with frightened and angry reactions from the townspeople. The encounter underscores how alien his presence feels in Glenfield and highlights the town's hostility to animals. He begins to realize he must navigate a wary human world.

Buddy spots a police truck and pursues it for several blocks until it stops at the police station. He discovers that the space capsule is missing, raising questions about what happened to it and who might have taken it. The moment marks his first concrete lead in reconnecting with his past and David.

Inside the police truck's trunk, Buddy encounters Victor, a caged dog who pleads for help. Officer Peck takes Victor into the station, which is connected to the local animal pound. Buddy feels compelled to help Victor and begins formulating a plan to expose Glenfield's treatment of animals.

In an alley, Felix the tuxedo cat lassoes and electroshocks Buddy, dragging him into a Batmobile-like vehicle. They drive to TurboCat's gadget-filled secret hideout in the Glenfield Museum, where his robot butler Sinclair awaits.

At the hideout, TurboCat explains that humans hate animals in Glenfield and points to Officer Peck as a key aggressor toward strays. He hints that he might help Buddy only if certain conditions are met, laying out the uphill battle to reclaim his past. The revelation reframes Buddy's goal from rescue to reclamation in this town.

Buddy tells TurboCat that he wants to locate the capsule to reunite with David, and TurboCat agrees to help if Buddy brings him milk. Buddy finds milk in David's lunch and delivers it to the hideout. He also hands Cassidy the carrot he found, learning that Cassidy is a former magician's rabbit that Felix admires.

Felix sets out to find Cassidy but is stopped by Officer Peck, illustrating the danger animals face in Glenfield. The interruption heightens the tension between the animal characters and the human authorities. Buddy and Felix press on despite the risk.

Felix hops onto Buddy's back, and Buddy suddenly demonstrates superhuman speed. The escape from Officer Peck follows as they race through the alleys of Glenfield. This power-up marks a turning point in their ability to navigate the town.

The duo reaches a Mega Store and breaks in, with Buddy becoming distracted by the store's array of items. He uses a 'cute eye trick' he had shown Felix earlier to persuade a human to leave, allowing them to slip past the startled clerk. The scene highlights Buddy's growing confidence and resourcefulness.
