A semi‑autobiographical television play by Dennis Potter, broadcast as part of the BBC’s Wednesday Play series. It follows Nigel Barton, a bright young man from a working‑class mining village who wins a scholarship to Oxford. He is condemned as a snob by his hometown, while the privileged Oxford students treat him like a rustic outsider. Caught between two worlds, Nigel struggles to reconcile with his proud, stubborn father and to survive the university’s pretentious atmosphere.
