What Happens in Sour Grapes: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Sour Grapes (2016) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Rudy Kurniawan was a wealthy Indonesian wine collector with a deep fascination for Burgundy. Over time, he spent millions of dollars acquiring wines while simultaneously selling a vast number of counterfeit bottles. In 2006, the auction house Acker Merrall & Condit set records by selling approximately US$35 million worth of wines from his collection.

The scheme began to unravel in 2008 during a sale at a Manhattan restaurant, where the auction firm claimed the wines were authenticated by top connoisseurs. The collection included bottles of Domaine Ponsot Clos Saint-Denis allegedly from 1945, 1949, and 1966; however, estate proprietor Laurent Ponsot revealed that this specific wine was not produced until 1982.

By 2012, the FBI raided the home of Rudy Kurniawan in Arcadia, Los Angeles, uncovering his fraudulent process. He had been collecting empty bottles, refilling them with cheaper wine, and forging the labels. In 2014, he became the first person in the United States convicted of this specific crime, receiving a ten-year federal sentence. Kurniawan declined to be interviewed for the documentary.

  2. 2

    Refill bottles with cheaper wine

    Rudy Kurniawan

He refilled the collected empty bottles with cheaper wine so each bottle again appeared to contain a full quantity of wine.

  3. 3

    Forge the labels

    Rudy Kurniawan

He forged labels for the refilled bottles, applying his document-forging ability to misrepresent the wine's vintage and producer.

Counterfeit bottles passed off as fine wine

    Rudy Kurniawan

What it looked like: The bottles appeared to be authentic bottles of rare fine wine because they used genuine bottles and forged labels.

The refilled, relabeled bottles became counterfeit bottles of fine wine, a fraudulent process uncovered when the FBI raided his Arcadia home in 2012 and led to his 2014 conviction.

More Movies Like Sour Grapes, by Mood & Story

Curated lists built around what makes Sour Grapes tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Darkly comic con stories like in Sour Grapes

An audacious scheme becomes suspenseful, absurd, and ultimately ruinous for its mastermind. If you liked Sour Grapes, explore movies like it featuring audacious schemes, dry absurdity, mounting suspicion, and hard-won downfall. These tense, darkly comic stories balance cerebral suspense with the audacity of deception, while maintaining brisk investigative momentum and emphasizing the consequences of eventual exposure.

  • audacious
  • cerebral
  • cat-and-mouse
  • bleak
  • Tone: tense, darkly humorous
  • Pacing: steady, escalating
Why these movies?

The story pattern: A confident schemer launches a risky but carefully managed deception, using polish and boldness to overcome skeptical gatekeepers. Success expands the operation and raises the cost of exposure; each new verification or contradiction tightens the noose. The usual arc moves from comic audacity through mounting suspense to legal judgment and a bleak personal cost.

Why they belong together: These films share a cerebral cat-and-mouse rhythm: an audacious plan unfolds in neat stages, authority figures express confidence, and hidden flaws gradually become impossible to contain. Their appeal comes from combining suspenseful escalation with darkly comic absurdity, while the steady investigative structure keeps attention on deception, reputation, and consequences.

Elite fraud and investigative unraveling like in Sour Grapes

A polished deception attracts elite buyers before investigators expose its hidden machinery. Movies like Sour Grapes and similar documentary stories follow sophisticated fraud penetrating trusted institutions, elite collecting spaces, auction houses, and financial markets. If you enjoyed the film's investigative structure, these stories deliver mounting uncertainty, procedural discoveries, institutional blind spots, and the collapse of a carefully maintained reputation.

  • Tone: tense, investigative, wry
  • Pacing: steady, methodical
Why these movies?

The story pattern: An intricate scheme first succeeds by convincing specialized authorities that an object or transaction is legitimate. As the operation scales, investigators and institutions begin checking the clues, and the narrative shifts from the schemer's perspective toward discovery and exposure. Its final movement typically strips away the scheme's prestige, leaving legal judgment, financial ruin, and a bleak sense of irreversible collapse.

Why they belong together: These stories are linked less by physical danger than by credibility under examination. Each uses a steady, information-driven rhythm to test a deceptively convincing system, and each finds suspense in expert gatekeepers, hidden anomalies, and institutional collapse. Their shared tone combines investigative rigor with irony and mounting unease.
