Will Proudfoot is introduced as a gentle and introverted boy raised within the strict environment of the Plymouth Brethren church. His upbringing prohibits him from engaging in modern entertainment like films or television, isolating him from his peers in school.

During a school day, Will is asked to leave class when a documentary is shown, highlighting his struggles. In the hallway, he meets Lee Carter, a mischievous boy recently expelled from class for troublesome behavior, marking the beginning of an unexpected friendship.

In an impulsive moment, Will and Lee inadvertently shatter a fish bowl. To protect Will, Lee takes the blame and demands Will’s treasured watch, a keepsake from Will's late father, symbolizing their budding relationship.
